My Story

Maryann the Black Bear

Maryann is one of two American black bears rescued by Popcorn Park Animal Refuge. She was just two years old when she was rescued alongside her sisters Ginger and Bonnie in 2005.

The trio was owned by a careless breeder who raised them to be sold. Unfortunately, the breeder had too many bears and they were living in unpleasant conditions, making it a less than ideal lifestyle for our bears. Maryann, Ginger, and Bonnie often escaped the property often and were found wandering the streets of Ohio. Fish and Wildlife got involved and the girls were brought to us to live the rest of their lives in peace without worrying or wanting for anything.

When Maryann arrived, she spent much time discovering a world she never knew existed. She loves to climb as high as she can, and swat an unsuspecting Bonnie as she passes by below. Sadly, Ginger has since passed away due to old age, but Maryann continues to enjoy her life with Bonnie. They enjoy playing, eating well, and have forgotten the sad, unhealthy life she once had. Finally! A life fit for a young bear!

Maryann loves foraging for grapes, apples, and peanuts, hanging out with her sister Bonnie, and greeting visitors at the Refuge. She can often be found hanging out by the fence to say "Hello!"

We hope you will consider supporting Maryann! She is so deserving of all the best care in the world!
