My Story

Cornelius the Corn Snake

Cornelius, or Corny for short, slithered into our lives back in 2022 when he was surrendered to our Newark shelter. It wasn’t long before he made his way to Popcorn Park, where he now lives the good life as one of our most charming Education Ambassadors. Corny is cool, calm, and curious, and he loves tagging along with our education team to meet new people and help teach visitors about his kind.

With his bright orange and white scales and striking red eyes, Corny is a real showstopper. He’s an albino corn snake, which means he was bred in captivity and has a unique look compared to his wild cousins. Native corn snakes usually have more earthy colors to help them blend in, but Corny’s got nothing to hide—he’s all about making an impression.

Even though corn snakes are native to New Jersey, you don’t see many of them in the wild anymore. Habitat loss and development have pushed their populations to the brink, and they’re now listed as endangered in the state. Corny’s here to change that. He’s on a mission to show people just how cool snakes really are—and why protecting them matters.
