Exotic Animals
When NJ Fish and Wildlife called Popcorn Park, we never expected to welcome a monkey into our sanctuary—but that’s exactly what happened when they confiscated a small, frightened African Green Monkey during police activity at a private residence. Avaya had been kept illegally, and without a proper place for her to go, she needed a safe and permanent home. We gladly stepped up, bringing her to Popcorn Park in 2018, where she could finally have the care, space, and enrichment she deserved.
Now fully grown, Avaya has settled into sanctuary life and has become a beloved part of our Popcorn Park family. She’s intelligent, playful, and endlessly curious, always watching the world around her. Mealtime is still her favorite part of the day, and she has a habit of carefully inspecting her dish, picking out her favorites first—sweet potatoes, grapes, and pasta always top the list! She also enjoys engaging with her caregivers and exploring the enrichment toys provided to keep her mind and body active.
African Green Monkeys like Avaya are highly social and intelligent animals, which is why they require specialized care. Unfortunately, the exotic pet trade continues to put primates in dangerous and inappropriate living situations. Monkeys like Avaya should never be kept as pets, as they have complex social and environmental needs that cannot be met in a home setting. At Popcorn Park, we provide her with a safe and enriching environment where she can live out her life with expert care.
By sponsoring Avaya, you’re helping provide her with the nutritious diet, medical care, and enrichment she needs to thrive. As a Wildlife Club sponsor, you’ll receive updates, letters, photos, and a membership card granting free entry to visit her. Please consider sponsoring Avaya today and be part of her incredible journey!
