Toby came to Popcorn Park in 2017 from a rescue organization that had previously placed Dogo, our other resident Patas monkey, with us. The rescue had saved a troop of Patas monkeys from a lab, but one of the males, Toby, was struggling to adapt to his new surroundings. In a primate community, a strict hierarchy is formed, with males often fighting for dominance, territory, and mates. Toby, being less dominant, had fallen to the bottom of the pecking order. His situation grew desperate as he began refusing to eat and hiding from the rest of the troop.
When we welcomed Toby to Popcorn Park, we were hopeful that he would find the companionship and peace he desperately needed. Toby was introduced to Dogo, and we were cautious about how they would interact. To our relief, the two monkeys were immediately curious about one another. Their bond was instant, and within a week, we introduced them officially. From that moment on, they became inseparable. Both monkeys found a companion they could trust, and without the pressure of competition, they grew more confident and comfortable with each other.
Today, Toby and Dogo are thriving together, enjoying a stable and secure environment at the Refuge. Toby’s transformation from a withdrawn, anxious monkey to a playful, social companion is nothing short of incredible. He and Dogo have brought out the best in each other, and their deep bond is a testament to the power of friendship and trust.
Toby's journey has been one of healing and growth, and you can help support his continued care and enrichment by becoming his sponsor. Your sponsorship will ensure that Toby and Dogo both continue to live their best lives at Popcorn Park, thriving together in the safety and peace they deserve.
