In late October 2015, Popcorn Park received an urgent call about two orphaned cougar cubs whose mother had been killed in a legal trophy hunt. With no safe place to go and facing the tragic prospect of euthanasia, the cubs found a second chance at life at Popcorn Park. After their arrival, they were named Tocho, meaning "mountain lion," and Shilo, meaning "brother," to reflect their strong connection to their wild roots and the bond they share.
Tocho, the more outgoing of the two, is a majestic and powerful presence at the Refuge. While he and his brother Shilo are still quite wild at heart, Tocho has grown into a confident and healthy cougar. He enjoys exploring his space and engaging with the staff, though he’s still a bit elusive to visitors, staying mostly in the background when they’re around. His natural instincts and playful energy are evident in his behavior as he roams the protected space that has become his home.
The story of Tocho and his brother highlights the dangers that cougars face in the wild, particularly from trophy hunting, which leaves cubs like them without a mother and at risk of a grim future. Thanks to Popcorn Park, Tocho has a safe and secure place to live, free from the threat of harm. We are committed to the conservation of wildlife like Tocho, and his presence at the Refuge allows us to continue raising awareness about the importance of protecting these incredible animals.
Tocho may be more reserved than some, but his spirit is undeniable. You can help ensure he continues to thrive in a safe environment by becoming his sponsor. Your support will help provide the care, enrichment, and protection Tocho needs to live a healthy, fulfilling life at Popcorn Park.
