Balto is a fluffy male wolf-dog with striking orange eyes that will stop you in your tracks and a beautiful coat that is truly breathtaking. From the moment he joined the Popcorn Park pack, Balto made himself right at home, confidently exploring his outdoor space between the barnyard and our lions. He’s even made his presence known to his feline neighbors with a few bold woofs!
Of the two wolf-dogs, Balto is the more confident and outgoing, while his companion, Coyote, is a bit more timid and shy. Despite their differences, both are incredibly curious and will often trot over to check out visitors with wagging tails and inquisitive sniffs. However, Balto is not your typical dog. Like all wolf-dogs, he retains strong wild instincts, he doesn’t seek out affection the way domestic dogs do and may play more roughly, much like a wolf.
Because of their unique needs and behaviors, many wolf-dogs are misunderstood and difficult to place. As a result, they are frequently neglected, abandoned, surrendered, or euthanized when owners realized too late they can be difficult to manage. In fact, according to estimates from the W.O.L.F. Sanctuary, up to 95% of captive-bred wolves and wolf-dogs do not make it past the age of two, not due to aggression, but because there are not enough appropriate homes or sanctuaries available.
Thankfully, a rescue from western North Carolina reached out to us about Balto and Coyote, and we were more than happy to offer them a safe, permanent home together at Popcorn Park.
Balto’s story is an important reminder of why wild animals should remain in the wild. Wolf-dogs are the result of breeding domestic dogs with wolves, often for novelty or status, but they are incredibly complex animals that are not suited for typical home environments. While owning a pure wolf is illegal, wolf-dogs can be owned in some areas depending on their genetic makeup, though laws vary widely and are often strict and complicated.
It has been some time since we’ve had wolf-heritage at the Refuge, and their care requires specialized diets, enrichment, and space. You can help welcome Balto to the Popcorn Park pack by checking out our wishlist or sponsoring him today to ensure he continues to thrive in his new home!
