Maximus is the gentle giant of Popcorn Park. At over 400 pounds, he is the largest of our tortoises and a favorite among visitors. But life wasn’t always so easy for Max. In 2011, he was rescued from a neglectful home where he and three other tortoises were being kept illegally in a cramped outdoor space with little access to veterinary care. When the Division of Fish and Wildlife intervened, they reached out to Popcorn Park for help, and we welcomed the tortoises into our care.
Upon arrival, it was clear they had been suffering for some time. Veterinary exams revealed respiratory infections, cracks in their shells, and in Max’s case, an older wound on top of his shell. While all four received immediate treatment, the original plan was for them to be transferred to a nearby zoo once they were healthy. However, Max had other plans. He quickly formed a special bond with Popcorn Park’s founder, John Bergmann, and it became clear that this was already home.
Now, Max is thriving in his spacious habitat, which he shares with an unlikely best friend—Chuck, a small Patagonian Mara. Despite their differences in size and species, the two have become inseparable companions. They follow each other around their enclosure, often seen lounging side by side in the sun or exploring their surroundings together. Mealtime is a shared experience as well—Max and Chuck happily munch on leafy greens together, enjoying the fresh produce that is an essential part of their diet. Their friendship is a heartwarming example of the special connections that can form when animals are given the care and space they need to flourish.
Max’s story is a testament to the second chances that Popcorn Park provides. With your support, he will continue to enjoy the care, comfort, and companionship he has found here. Please consider sponsoring Max today!
