My Story

Savannah the African Lioness

Meet Savannah! This gorgeous African Lioness is known for her big personality and fascinating journey. Born on June 6, 2014, Savannah spent her early years at several Canadian zoos alongside her brother, Aslan. When the zoo they were at closed in April 2020, Savannah, Aslan, and two tigers—Jonathan and Jules—were left in need of a new home. Popcorn Park Animal Refuge stepped in to rescue these big cats and began the complex journey to bring them to their lifelong home.

The process was long, requiring two years of planning and coordination, especially with the complications of the Covid-19 pandemic and international transport. After receiving care at the Granby Zoo in Canada, Savannah, Aslan, Jonathan, and Jules finally arrived at Popcorn Park on June 26, 2022, ready to begin their new chapter.

Savannah is a big, playful lioness who loves engaging with visitors. With her regal presence and endless curiosity, she captures everyone’s attention. Her natural hunting instincts come to life when she plays with enrichment toys, allowing her to express her behaviors in a safe, controlled way. Although Aslan has passed, Savannah has bonded with Kanu, a male lion who lost his mate. They now share space next to one another and enjoy each other’s company, adding to the calm, friendly atmosphere at the Refuge.

Savannah’s journey has been full of change, but at last, she has a stable and loving home where she can truly thrive. We’re excited to offer her lifelong care, and we’d love for you to join her journey by sponsoring her care. Your support helps ensure that Savannah continues to receive the enrichment, attention, and care she needs to live her best life at Popcorn Park. We know you'll fall in love with this one-of-a-kind lioness just as much as we have!
