My Story

Kya the Blind Tiger

Kya is a magnificent white Bengal tiger who arrived at Popcorn Park in September of 2013 at just 3 years of age. Although she is very beautiful, the white coloring in tigers often carries medical issues with it, including problems with vision, such as glaucoma. When Kya was accepted at a zoo in Maryland at 6 months of age, she was already experiencing some sight issues. Over the next 2-1/2 years, Kya's glaucoma progressed until she was completely blind, and although the zoo cared very much for Kya, they could no longer accommodate her.

One of our veterinarians, Dr. Jonathan Bergmann, heard of Kya's plight, and soon she arrived at her new lifelong home, Popcorn Park. An existing tiger compound was made safe for Kya, and she soon adapted wonderfully. She plays with her toys, tosses her bone around on bone night, and comes to the fence to say hello whenever she's called. Despite being blind, Kya is clearly enjoying life to the fullest and not letting her handicap hinder her in any way.

Kya gets regular visits from our staff vet and has started a series of optomologist appointments with NorthStar Vets for both overall health and her eyes. Kya is not in pain, but does require medication for glaucoma. She would love some sponsors to help with her medical expenses and medication. Please consider sponsoring Kya today!
