My Story

Kya the Blind Tiger

Kya is a stunning white Bengal tiger who has called Popcorn Park home since 2013. While her rare white coloring is striking, it comes with a cost—many white tigers suffer from genetic health issues due to inbreeding. For Kya, this meant early-onset glaucoma, a condition that robbed her of her sight before she was even three years old. She was originally taken in by a zoo in Maryland, but as her condition worsened, they could no longer accommodate her. Fortunately, one of our veterinarians, Dr. Jonathan Bergmann, stepped in to give her a second chance.

Despite her blindness, Kya has adapted incredibly well to life at Popcorn Park. She confidently navigates her enclosure, responds to the voices of her caretakers, and even engages in playful antics. She loves tossing around her toys, enjoying special treats on bone night, and greeting her favorite staff members at the fence. Her keen senses allow her to experience the world in ways that go beyond sight, and she has proven time and again that her blindness does not define her.

Now a senior tiger, Kya faces additional health challenges related to her genetics and age. She receives ongoing medical care to manage her glaucoma, along with regular check-ups from our veterinary team to ensure she remains as comfortable as possible. Her resilience is remarkable, but her care is complex, requiring specialized treatment, medication, and close monitoring.

Kya’s story is a reminder of the unintended consequences of breeding animals for appearance rather than health. White tigers like her are often bred for their beauty, but the reality behind their genetics is far less glamorous. Kya is one of the lucky ones—she has found a safe, loving home where her needs are met, and where she is valued for who she is, not just how she looks.

Providing Kya with the best possible care is a commitment we take seriously, but we need your help. By sponsoring Kya, you’ll be directly contributing to her medical care, enrichment, and overall well-being. Please consider becoming a sponsor today and help us continue to give Kya the life she deserves!
